From bestselling author Amanda Prowse comes a tale of a blissful life, a happy marriage, a beloved son…and a tragedy that destroys it all.
When Rachel Croft wakes up on her family’s boat in Bermuda, it’s to sunshine and yet another perfect day…until she goes to wake her seven-year-old son, Oscar. Because the worst thing imaginable has happened. He isn’t there.
In the dark and desperate days that follow, Rachel struggles to navigate her grief. And while her husband, James, wants them to face the tragedy together, Rachel feels that the life they once shared is over. Convinced that their happy marriage is now a sham, and unable to remain in the place where she lost her son, she goes home to Bristol alone.
Only when she starts receiving letters from Cee-Cee, her housekeeper in Bermuda, does light begin to return to Rachel’s soul. She and James both want to learn to live again—but is it too late for them to find a way through together?

Yet, it’s exactly this, the tragic disappearance of a 7 year-old boy off his parents yacht, that Prowse chooses as the subject of her latest book. And not just as an ugly episode in a wider narrative, but as the focus of the entire story. It’s heavy stuff, even for Prowse, who has never shied away from difficult topics. Loss, grief, anger, blame, guilt: The Coordinates of Loss presents itself as a study of human emotion at its most visceral. Unfortunately, Prowse doesn’t quite pull it off.
From the very first chapter, everything points to a thoroughly depressing read. For how could there be a happy ending - or anything remotely uplifting - after the awful drowning of young Oscar? It’s every author’s aim to make their characters relatable, but what mother reading this could honestly want to put herself in Rachel’s shoes and feel her suffering? For our own sanity, empathy has its limits.
And I think this is what spoiled the book for me. The subject matter is just so inconceivably awful, either I couldn’t fully engage with it, or Prowse’s narrative just didn’t hit the right notes. Yes, her approach is sensitive and sympathetic. Her characters, especially Cee-Cee, are convincing and likeable. Her writing style is simple and free-flowing. But, for me, there was a discord between what I was reading and what I was feeling. And that’s why I felt no sense of satisfaction when I finished the book.
I think perhaps Prowse bit off more than she could chew. The subject needed a different touch, a different style, to truly resonate with the reader. I can see someone like Anita Shreve, for example, making a far better fist of it.
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful. You can find more candid book reviews on my Amazon profile page.
I started this book knowing I have loved Amanda Prowse's other books but this book was on a whole other level and I didn't want to put it down.
You fall in love with the characters instantly and feel the many emotions they are experiencing throughout. The characters are vivid and you could clearly picture them as you got to know them on many levels as this wonderful read progressed.
This book totally broke my heart, left me with a horrendous book hangover but it was exceptional and I wish I could start this fresh all over again as it was another work of art and I loved every page
We all deal with emotions and situations differently.
So, when something unimaginably terrible happens beyond all comprehension, our immediate family and support network shuts down from the 'norm'.
Rachel and James who have everything they could wish for, materialistic and family wise, find their world as they know it come crashing down.
A regular boat outing as they have all been on many times before, goes terribly wrong without any explanation.
No one around them can relate to their loss, and they find themselves not only unable to endure the company of others,
but their feelings towards each other change. The couple begin to question each others actions before, after and at the time of the inconceivable event.
A selfless act of sharing someone's own tragic loss begins to bring an acceptance and understanding that was unimaginable since it happened. This from someone who although shared their day to day lives, they knew almost nothing about.
Amanda Prowse has achieved another page turning story. Although, this time, how can there be a happy ending?
