How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent basic calvados
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2022
This Calvados is the base of a range that goes up to the (delicious, refined, expensive) 20-year-old Réserve des Seigneurs. This, however, is a two year old VS spirit, and yes it’s a bit raw and unrefined. But it has a lovely distinctive apple flavour, head and shoulders above some of the factory alternatives. Produced by a single distillery using apples grown in its vicinity, it is the real article. So good value for around £25 a bottle. If you want refinement, save your pennies and go for the 15-year-old (my own favourite) ~£60, or the lovely 20-year-old ~£85.

2.0 out of 5 starsNOT what I was hoping for

I wish I had taken more note of Southerly95. I’m inclined to agree with them whole heartedly. Although this Calvados is ok, it’s a far cry from the [sublime] taste that others would have you believe. It’s pale, quite harsh and not the smooth sup I was so looking forward to. I’ve just returned from Brittany, where their equivalent is Lambig, or Fine Bretagne. That IS sublime and dark with woody tones and a lavish aftertaste. Seriously, save your money and buy 500ml Tesco VSOP Calvados, which would knock this stuff into a cocked hat, and it’s only £15

A bottle of brandy with a French label on the front is how I would best describe this.
'Made for the UK market' the little sticker said...'here, have our worst stuff, you lot won't know any difference' I say.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little unrefined, but a good starting place for someone new to Calvados.

This is a good value Calvados.

It's certainly not the most refined. It is a little raw and rough around the edges, but as a starting place for someone who's new to Calvados, it ticks the boxes.

The Calvados flavour and experience is all there, and it's certainly smooth enough not to turn someone off the whole idea.

If you enjoy this, you can then look at an older more expensive choice, that will delight you with its flavours and complexity.

And it must be said, the bottle is very attractive.

I hope you found this review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a Go
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2014

I'm a malt whisky drinker but bought this to try because I fancied a change. This is the 3rd calvados I've tried and I really like it. It's a different drinking experience altogether from malt but still hits the spot. The bouquet is as you would expect of apples and it ihas a subtle Apple flavour swiftly followed by the alcohol kick. I took it to a weekend away with my pals who are all malt drinkers and it went down very well. In fact it vanished rather too quickly for my liking. We all agreed that it will never replace malt but it is still very enjoyable.

My quibble is not with the calvados its with the price. When I bought it it was approx £25 with £5 delivery. It's now approx £30 with free delivery. I know free delivery is to be charitable a 'play on words' but I still find it annoying. There are more honestly worded suppliers on Amazon and even though it's a few pence more Ill be buying from them just as a matter of principle. Griping done this calvados is well worth a go.

This really isn’t nice. We tasted 2 shots from the bottle and will pour it away. It is currently sitting on a window ledge in the utility room. I don’t like pouring hard earned money away but this was purchased as a present for my wife after she heard on the radio how nice Calvados was. I need to galvanise myself and pour it down the sink. This isn’t what they we’re talking about.

I fell in love with Calvados many years ago when Boulard was a client of mine. I have enjoyed many different brands but sadly this was one of the least favourite. Somehow is was a little sharp and did not have a deep apple flavour. I still enjoyed it!

Brings back memories of travels in France. I was concerned about some of the reviews I read after purchasing but I have to say I'm happy. I've so far used this calvados for flambé and soaking prunes for stuffing and in cocktails and the taste has been lovely

Fairly smooth, with good but not outstanding apple flavour. I think I slightly preferred Sainsbury's TTD Calvados, but this is very nice and better value. I'll definitely buy this again.

I love this. For the price it is up there with the so called best and I've tried some of those. Superb aroma and flavour with a delicate aftertaste. It really reflects the Calvados heritage.
