Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.
THIS IS A BRAND NEW, NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED FAITH MARTIN BOOK.
Jenny Starling is working at The Spindlewood Inn for the weekend. It’s hosting a Regency Extravaganza, involving historical costume, amateur dramatics and food.
Leading actress of the amateur dramatic society and reputed man-eater Rachel Norman portrays a doomed noblewoman. But when she turns up actually drowned in the pond, there’s suddenly a murder to investigate.
There’s been plenty of trouble at the idyllic country inn. The performers weren’t a happy troupe, and Jenny discovers a simmering romantic tension.
Who wanted Rachel dead and why? Jenny Starling is going to need all her wits to crack this complex case.
This is the seventh in a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the final page.
Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, L.J. Ross, T.E. Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.

JENNY STARLING
In her late twenties, Jenny Starling is an impressive woman. Physically, she stands at 6ft 1inch, and has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. Curvaceous and sexy, she’s a modern single woman, living the lifestyle that suits her – that of a travelling cook. Her famous (and now very rich) father, is a ‘celebrity’ cook, divorced from Jenny’s mother. Jenny drives a disreputable cherry-red van, and is happy travelling the country catering events and cooking great food. She is on a one-woman crusade to bring back ‘real’ food. And definitely doesn’t like having to divert her attention from achieving the perfect Dundee cake or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve a murder. She finds crime very distracting, especially when there is chocolate to temper or pike to poach. Nevertheless, she is very good at reading people, and with a quick and agile brain, becomes very good at unmasking killers. And her always-undaunted sense of humour goes a long way in keeping her sane when all around her people are dropping like flies.

This, the seventh outing for freelance cook, Jenny Starling, sees her filling-in at a large country inn. Having created a special menu to compliment a themed Edwardian event, Jenny is pleased to overhear plenty of positive feedback. However, when a member of the visiting amateur dramatic group is found face-down in the duck-pond, Jenny soon becomes more interested in solving the crime…
A well-written, traditionally-styled cosy with plenty of red-herrings, and a pleasing twist-in-the-tale before the mystery is solved. Some delightful lighter moments too: I particularly enjoyed the very cool reception Jenny got from the officer called-in to investigate – he more than met his match in the rather aloof Jenny. However, it did take a while to get going, and am-dram murders have surely been done to death (awful pun intended). Overall, ‘The Country Inn Mystery’ is a decent read, but there just wasn’t enough to make it stand-out from the crowd.
She is helping with a 'Regency' event where attendees wear historical costume. As you might expect, one of the guests is murdered - in this case Rachel Norman a leading light in the amateur dramatic society.
While I always find this series a tad contrived and the character of Jenny Starling not particularly credible, this is still a good read with plenty of twists and turns and an unexpected red herring. As usual, Jenny leads the local constabulary rather reluctantly to the solution of the mystery.
Relief chef, Jenny, is working at the Spindlewood Inn in the village of Caulcott Deeping in the Cotswolds. The village is putting on a Regency extravaganza, which includes performances of a local historical event by the amateur dramatic society. And while they may be amateurs, the battle of egos is just as sharp.
The story ambles along with Jenny observing the varied characters who are there for the weekend. It soon becomes apparent that some of these people have other agendas, especially where the main actor, Rachel Norman, is concerned. It’s only a matter of time before she winds up dead, but how she was killed is a baffling mystery in the Agatha Christie tradition.
While the police try to piece it all together, Jenny’s observational skills and ability to connect the sometimes obscure clues ensures she solves the murder with skill and aplomb.
The author’s produced an entertaining and enjoyable read, filled with suspects, motives and red herrings and a liberal sprinkling of humour and wry observation, which lift it above the average cosy mystery.
