When someone with vital information turns up dead, it becomes clear that whoever is behind the murders will stop at nothing to conceal their tracks.

About the Author

John R. Ellis has lived in Yorkshire for most of his life and has spent many years exploring Yorkshire’s diverse landscapes, history, language and communities. He recently retired after a career in teaching, mostly in further education in the Leeds area. In addition to the Yorkshire Murder Mystery series he writes poetry, ghost stories and biography. He has completed a screenplay about the last years of the poet Edward Thomas and a work of faction about the extraordinary life of his Irish mother-in-law. He is currently working on his memoirs of growing up in a working-class area of Huddersfield in the 1950s and 1960s.

I have lived in Yorkshire for most of my life and write murder mysteries set in the varied landscapes and communities of the county. I began writing after I retired from a teaching career, mostly in further education. I am a member of a writers' group in Otley near Leeds and we publish anthologies of our work. I also write poetry and short stories, coming second in both categories at the 2018 Saltaire Writer's Competition. I am interested in biographical writing and am working on my memoirs of growing up in Huddersfield in the 1950s and 1960s and on researching the extraordinary life of my Irish mother-in-law whose son was sent to Australia as part of the child migrant scheme

Yet again this is a book with a revised title and I have made the mistake of buying it a second time. Previously it was called something like the Body in Jingling Pot.
I really resent paying even only £1.99 for something I have read,
Could this not be made clear before purchase?

This book has its merits, but it is more of a good try by an amateur writer than the work of a good writer, and whilst I applaud the writer for effort, it isn't really up to the standard I'd expect from a published book. It starts well with what promises to be an interesting plot, and the Yorkshire Dales background obviously gives it an appeal to people familiar with the area. The characterisation is poor, however, and the writer tells us things rather than convincing us through the way people behave, show us their feelings, or the way he sets the scene. Minor examples of this are when a female colleague makes it clear to the sergeant who is one of the main characters that she is available, and next thing they're in bed, or when we're told that a London friend who's a bit of lad is fun, when he doesn't sound anything of the kind. Some things, such as attitudes to women, seem to be add-ons inserted because the auther feels they should be there. I'm not criticising the author's ideas, just his ability to express them, which is what writing's all about. There are moments, presumably when the he's writing about things he's familiar with, which are better. The structure is a bit iffy - there's a bit of jumping around between characters, and the reader being told things the police don't know - and they're a bit slow about a vital clue. It's not a terrible book, and I suppose it depends on what the reader expects. I was hoping for something better.

I knew I had made a mistake buying this in the first couple of pages. His first day he turned up ‘smartly dressed in an Italian designer suit and his favourite Armani shoes’. This is a detective sergeant who had worked at the Met but now it’s his first day in Yorkshire. Who would turned up dressed in expensive designer clothes ? Surely even at the Met he might have to investigate a murder with blood and guts. After just turning up for work at the station he found himself at the entrance to a pothole. Then it had to be explained to him what a pothole was, if this man is so thick how on earth did he get the job. I’ve lost the will with this one, I’ve tried three times to get into it, but I’ve given up.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A brilliantly inventive plot that was really different from anything I've read in a long time. Lovely descriptions of the Dales and the surrounding villages and countryside.
I like Oldroyd, a decent almost old fashioned copper who doesn't rant and rave like a lot of D.C.I's, and is very much looked up to by everyone. Carter will take a bit of getting used to, but he's already making headway by getting himself a pair of decent walking boots....
The editing could do with tidying up, and I did find the chapters overly long, but I will definitely be looking forward to reading more in this series.

If you enjoy Ann Cleeves, Stephen Booth or Martin Edwards books then you will enjoy this. Interesting idea using local landscapes, lots of red herrings, easy to read but well written. Description of the dales just enough to give atmospheres and underlying personal stories that can be built on. Only criticism is that the new detective from the south has fit in rather too easily and a budding romance begun rather too quickly. Everyone on the police side a bit too 'nice'. Maybe this will change with the next book which I have already bought. Really enjoyed this one and Will add to the above list of my favourite crime writers!

I really enjoyed this book, well written with an intriguing plot. The characters are believable and interesting, (I look forward to watching them grow in future books) a great sense of place, I loved the way the landscape, under and over ground, opened up and added to the overall atmosphere of the book. But then it is Yorkshire- God's own country!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a well written detective story without the excessive gore and sadism that seems to be so prevalent now

Slow,boring,drawn out.I really do not know why i finished it.I kept thinking it has got to get better than this.It was always obvious that there was another cave entrance..My wife who is an avid reader got fed up and gave up with it.I gave it to charity as i did not want to give it to anyone i know..Sorry,not for me,and will not be reading this author anytime soon..

I choose this novel because it is set in a part of the country I know well and also because it is a murder mystery.
The characters are believable and their personal lives are cleverly woven into the story as it unfolds.
This is the first J.R.Ellis novel I have read and will happily read more.
A good read with plenty of twists and turns.
