At age five, Esme was asked to write in her notebook, but instead, she filled it with drawings - the only way she knew to express herself. At seven, when it was discovered she was partially deaf, she found refuge in her sketchbooks. Shortly after, Esme made her first garment and a passion for sewing and designing was born. The '90s saw a career move into costumes for films, where she designed outfits for Trainspotting, Bridget Jones's Diary and The Beach, before she moved onto the small screen herself.

A celebration of a creative life lived differently, Behind the Seams is a reminder that it's never too early, or too late to pick up a needle and start stitching in a new direction.

Really enjoying this book as it provides insight into Esme's route through the world of fashion. It's matter of fact about aspects of her life which seem extraordinary to me. Her writing style is understated and energetic with her personality shinning through. Wish it was a longer read.

I really enjoyed this account of Esme's life and hoovered it up in one sitting. The photos of young Esme were a revelation and helped me to place her in the right context with more famous contemporaries in the London party scene. She's been a beacon of creativity her whole life and it's fabulous to know that she's still taking on new challenges. Long may she reign as an inspiration to us oldies!

I didn’t think it was particularly well written so it didn’t hold my attention. Sadly, for me, it falls into the category of “I was born at an early age” autobiographies. It’s a nice tale about enduring friendships and close family relationships but otherwise unremarkable.

I’ve absolutely loved this autobiography. I bought it thinking it would be mainly about Esme’s life in sewing and being an avid sewist myself was looking forward to that. However it is much more about her rather bohemian family and her working relationships. Esme has a wonderfully dry sense of humour and her story about informing her mums GP about her death creased me up. I haven’t read beyond this point yet but felt I had to write my review now whilst it is still fresh in my mind. As a mine of funny stories as well as an insight into a fascinating life I cannot recommend this book enough.

A lovely lady and an interesting life, but it's a pity she wrote it herself. You can hear her voice behind it - and it's flat. Her narratorial skills are not of the same quality as her sewing skills. The material is squandered - interesting detail about the times and personalities is given no more weight than the vast amount of family detail. It was a case for a ghost writer, or at least a very good copy editor to talk her through how to make good use of her material. I am aware, however, that the home sewing fraternity has greatly enjoyed it, so perhaps the fault is in me!
