Product Description

BabyDan established in 1947 has been producing innovative, strong and durable safety and stair gates for many years. The BabyDan Odense is our latest wall fix stair gate which has been developed for ease of use and installation. This gate fits very narrow spaces from 60.5cm (23.9") to wider spaces 102cm (40.1") and any width in between. The Odense is ideal for stairs and busy corridors as the gate does not feature a trip bar. The Odense named after our second largest island in Denmark features simple Scandinavian clean lines and manufactured using the very highest quality European FSC grade beechwood. The plastic wall fittings are all made from PVC plastics and are also produced in BabyDan's very own highly accredited factory in Denmark. The gate can be installed so it can open in one or both directions and with adult operated quick release fittings can be easily removed. when mounted the gate is 74.5cm high. The gate meets the latest safety standards meeting both European EN1930: 2011 and American ASTM1004.

I have two of these - 1 at the top, and 1 at the bottom of the stairs - they are solid and look smart.

The gate comes in two half's allowing it to be adjusted depending on the opening, it then has screw bolts for finer adjustments which then connect to the wall mounted hinge brackets.

Product comes with a installation guide and a link to a App that gives a step-by-step installation animation, so you can't really go wrong. It does come with installation templates so you get the spacing correct for the fixings, just make sure they are aligned on each side! Only screws are provided, no wall plugs so make sure you have the correct fixing for the type of material its going to be fixed to!

A nice detail would be if they included screw caps that hide the screw heads post install.

We got this to ‘match’ the standard (non-extendable) BabyDan gate we already ha e at the bottom of the stairs, which has yet to be figured out by my granddaughter (2.5). It is still the product I’d get again, but there are some annoyances, such as that the bars don’t line up where the two leaves overlap, and in terms of installation there is no guidance about how to level it if your gap to fill is not the same top and bottom (as many older UK houses won’t be!). I worked it out in the end, but it had me dozed for some time and I’m not a DIY idiot (granted not am I an expert). Please BabyDan, look at how you can make this or the guidance better for wonky houses.

Was a little concerned when it arrived because it looked complicated to install! However they had a link that I accessed which explained it beautifully! It was so easy in the end. Fitted well on my new stairs and looks very impressive! Easy to manipulate, even the four year old can open it, but that’s not a problem as he needs to access the upstairs! It’s the baby it was bought for and does a perfect job stopping her going up the stairs

We didn't want a pressure gate because of the worry of tripping over the bottom bar.. So we opted for a wall fix instead. We chose Wood over metal which actually suits our home better than a white one. It is situated in a wider doorway and was easy to install.

Just a tip first of all download the the free Onbox App which is a really simple animated step by step fitting guide, so simple.
This is a really nice solid wooden gate that does the job perfectly, fitted it at the bottom of my stairs, no bar across the bottom to trip over so ideal. Nice wide opening to walk through when it’s open and a really simple but effective one hand opening system. It also has a really neat trick, press a couple of like taps back and you can release the gate from the wall and put out of the way when you don’t need it and just slots/clicks back in to place when required. Brilliant.

This is not easy to install

I chose this gate to go at the top of a narrow steep staircase in my Victorian house. It comes with written instructions and you can download an app which takes you to a site which has animations of how to install it.
The problem is that both the hinge and lock fixings are placed by using templates (supplied) which start at floor level. That's all very well if you live in a house with level hard surface floors, but in a house with wonky, carpet-covered floors and walls that are crooked it's a nightmare. The lock mechanism is robust, but to get it to work you have to be millimetre perfect in placing the wall mounting. I like to think I'm moderately handy, but this took a lot of thinking, measuring and drawing lines on walls using a spirit level to get it sitting level. For the aesthetic purists, the other issue is that, because the hinge and latch come off at different points of the gate, even when you've got the height of the fixings right right the gate sits across the gap at an angle rather than square. I had lost the will to live by the time I worked this out. Personally I think the installation instructions need to be completely rewritten and arguably some of the fixings should allow for adjustment once screwed in place.
Having said all of that, once installed this is a robust and safe product. It doesn't have a bar across the bottom to trip over and is able to protect a really wide range of staircase widths.
