When will I ever learn to not start a book by Susie Lynes at bedtime? You'd think I'd have known better before deciding to dive in to her 10th - YES TENTH - book at 10.30pm on a Friday night. But no. And if it hadn't been for the other half telling me in no uncertain terms at 1.30am to 'put that bloody kindle down' I probably would have finished it in one go. It's that good.

There are so many issues very cleverly interwoven in this book to produce one almighty banger. Toxic relationships (my God, women can be so cruel), between friends and families, infidelity, infertility, family breakdown, and male consent all come to the fore in this story about Jane Reece, a woman with a successful business, a devoted husband and a very close knit, very small circle of friends.

All seems well until best friend Sophie introduces Lexie to the group. And then Jane's problems start. Having been on the receiving end of a very nasty adult female bully myself, I wanted so much to tell Jane that I knew what she was going through and to let her know that she wasn't alone and that she was to be believed. But of course I couldn't, and so the unravelling continued.

And then there's that watch and the trouble that caused...

I can't say anymore about this book because it's worth so much more than any words I can put together to tell you how brilliant it is.

Jane and Frankie are happy, each running their own businesses, she is part of a running group called Runner Beans, along with her close friends; Sophie, Hils and Kath and they go out each week for 'Friday night drinks'. When Sophie drops a bombshell, Jane is devastated but she's happy for her friend and wishes her well, then Sophie introduces a new friend, Lexie to the others and the dynamics change, on the surface she seems lovely, but with Jane she acts differently, and she has no idea why, it's not long before Lexie comes between the two friends, chipping away at their close bond and painting Jane in a very bad light. Lexie soon has news of her own and decides to make it a double celebration at a posh hotel and it's here that Jane discovers Lexie has been lying all along, there is no baby...

The Baby Shower is the latest sublime creation by this author, it's a multi-layered story with realistic characters that draw you in from the first page. There are some very delicate subjects covered here and, as always, Lynes tells them with compassion and sensitivity. The breakdown of a relationship between a couple is widely discussed but, when it comes to the loss of friendship it seems to be swept under the carpet as if it's not important, so it was refreshing to see the author cover this in great detail, because friends are an important part of life, they are the family we choose, and there's part of a conversation in this book that really struck a chord with me; 'What's the point in having friends if you don't love each other? Just because it's not your love life, don't mean it ain't love. Don't mean it don't hurt like hell when it goes wrong.' Having experienced this myself, as I'm sure many others have, it's true, it hurts like hell! Jane had my full sympathy throughout this story, which I inhaled in less than 24 hours, once again this author has put pen to paper and created a masterpiece. I highly recommend this book and all her others.

The Baby Shower by S E Lynes is a superb, multi layered psychological thriller. An established group of female friends are infiltrated by a shiny newcomer, intent on destroying one member of the group, but why?
I adored the way this book explores the love and trust involved in women’s close friendships. It shows how vulnerable we are when we give ourselves completely, sharing our deepest secrets with a person we believe will always have our back. The devastating results of having our trust betrayed is played out in heart wrenching clarity in this brilliant page turner.
I only realised on reading this novel that the agony of losing platonic love is rarely written about. I admire the way Lynes shows it to be different, but equally as painful as the breakdown of a romantic relationship.
Having experienced infertility myself, I thought Lynes dealt with this subject with great insight and sensitivity.
The stakes are high from the very first page and the cast are the kind of complex and truly relatable characters we’ve come to expect from this talented writer. On top of this, Lynes gives us an unpredictable and gripping story and a thoroughly satisfying ending. I didn’t think anything could throw Mother off the top spot of S E Lynes books for me, but The Baby Shower has done it. Can’t wait to see what S E Lynes comes up with next!
