When I first started playing I was overwhelmed by the appearance of the game and the sheer size of the map. Much of the graphics and gameplay style has been taken from the previous game with the introduction of levels and more and more roleplaying elements. This has both good and bad aspects as similarly to many traditional RPG's you now have areas you know are above your level. Earlier Assassin Creed games did not have these artificial constraints and allowed you to explore the world more naturally.
The plot in Assassins Creed Odyssey involves you playing either a male or female mercenary (your choice) mixed up in the Peloponessian War. I say mixed up as your actual involvement is confusing at best. While you are free to focus on fighting missions for one particular side the soldiers from either side will still attack you on sight, and missions often have you killing both sides. Your choice to fight for one side or the other seems to have little effect on the overall state of the world.
Neither is there much explanation of why you seem to be an assassin hundreds of years before the creation of the first assassin sect in medieval Syria. For some reason you are just good at sneaking about and stabbing people, in this case with the broken Spear of Leonidas. One special ability even lets you assassinate at range, literally teleporting about the place chain-assassinating.
There are hundreds of side quests to choose from which range from the entertainingly well written to the rather dull fetch and carry tasks typical of RPG's. Many reward you with high quality items, although you generally acquire so many high quality items that it is annoying having to constantly sell or dismantle the ones you don't want. Which leads me to one of my biggest criticisms - the microtransactions.
Once again Ubisoft have felt it necessary to introduce endless microtransactions to acquire items which cannot be found or purchased in game but need you to spend real money on them. They describe these as "unique" items but really anyone stupid enough to spend additional money on them can acquire them. After spending £50 on a game that does not even include a multiplayer option I have no wish to spend more money to effectively cheat and upgrade my character with equipment they have not earned. By making such items available it only lessens the impact of finding something epic within the game.
As with most Assassin Creed games the real pleasure from the game comes from exploring the historical environment. This is I think the largest Assassins Creed game map yet with vast areas to explore, including sailing a trireme around the Mediterranean and engaging in ship to ship combat. There are a lot of spectacular historical sights and many hidden secrets tucked away on the map. However encounters with NPC's tend to be either they want to kill you or they want to give you a mission. You still can't converse with anyone else and this leaves the world seeming too artificial, like it exists only for your characters benefit, which of course it does.
So while Assassins Creed Odyssey provides an enjoyable open world experience with some amazing graphics it falls far short of what it could be. After a few hours of playing I found myself thinking "oh look, another military camp" and "oh look another animal lair" without ever really feeling engaged or motivated to carry on further. While I appreciate the efforts to make Assassins Creed more of an RPG they havn't got it quite right here. It's nice to be able to visit Ancient Greece but I'd like something more interesting to do while I am there.
You don't need any knowledge of the past AC games to play this. I'm 20+ hours in and so far there's only been one 30 second cutscene near the start that suggests there's any other lore going on - but it doesn't impact what's going on in game, or your ability to enjoy the gameplay.
Graphics are fantastic. Controls and interface are easy to grasp and use. No real bugs or glitches encountered as of yet.
Anyone complaining about having to 'grind' and the micro transactions being necessary - they're not if you're here to just enjoy the game to the max, instead of rushing through it in a hurry to get completionist status. This is a huge game: it's meant to take time, to be enjoyed.
I thought the game was insanely grindy, most likely because of my stubbornness towards differences to my all time favourite game franchise. I stopped playing it not long after I made my initial review, but came back to play a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved and enjoyed every moment, even got the platinum trophy.
At the time I complained I feel that Ubisoft made some changes to XP payouts as I found it much more easier to level up after a few months break.
I’d highly recommend the game to new and old Assassin’s Creed fans, I rated it a 4/5 mainly because there’s some annoying bugs, texture bugs, render distance being a bit rubbish. But all is good and amazingly fun.
