Dr Andrew Birnie
ALTRUIST Dermatologist Sunscreen was initiated by Dr Andrew Birnie, a Consultant Dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon based in Canterbury, in partnership with some of the best formulation scientists in Europe to provide premium quality sunscreen at an affordable price through reducing profit margins.
Why SPF 30?
- The British Association of Dermatologists recommends use of sunscreen of at least SPF 30
- Highly acceptable formulation likely to increase compliance – none of the whiteness often associated with SPF 50
Patch testing on 50 volunteers
Revealed no allergic or irritant reactions. (Patch testing was performed according to COLIPA guidelines. Undiluted ALTRUIST- Dermatologist Sunscreen was tested on 50 volunteers, with both normal and sensitive skin types, using SDS (1 per cent) and water as controls. SDS (1 per cent) caused positive reactions in 12 participants. There were no positive reactions to water or the sunscreen.)

ALTRUIST supports Under the Same Sun
A charity supporting children with albinism in Tanzania and the rest of Africa. We believe everybody should have an equal opportunity to be protected from the sun. With each tube purchased we will donate 10p. You can help children with albinism in Africa.
Skin Cancer in children
With its scorching hot sun, the tropical climate of Tanzania puts people with albinism at a high risk for developing skin cancer at an early age. 100 per cent of children with albinism in Tanzania show signs of sun-related skin damage by the age of 10.
- A genetic condition, more prevalent in Africa
- Results in looking white due to lack of pigmentation in hair, eyes and skin
- Most are visually impared
- Highly vulnerable to sun exposure resulting in high rates of skin cancer
- Less than 2 per cent will live to be 40 years old
- Since 2006 more than 300 recorded attacks, a lot involved children
Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. Cumulative UV exposure increases your risk of skin cancer and skin ageing. Reduce your risk by covering up with clothes and a broad rimmed hat when outdoors. Apply sunscreen generously to exposed skin before going out. Reapply frequently (frequency will vary according to conditions, but every 2-3 hours is a good guide) and after swimming or towelling.
Dermatologist's advice: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Try to avoid the sun between 11am – 3 pm. Prolonged exposure to the sun may be harmful. Babies should not be exposed to the sun.
SPF = Sun Protection Factor
SPF = Sun Protection Factor (the number of times longer you can stay in the sun before burning compared to wearing no sunscreen) indicates UVB protection.
- Sunscreen prevents UV radiation reaching the skin
- UVB (ultraviolet radiation) causes sunburn
- UVA causes wrinkles, brown spots (photoageing)
- Water resistant good for sports and outdoor activities
- Amount of UVB radiation filtered out by different SPFs: SPF 15 93 per cent; SPF 30 96.7 per cent; SPF 50 98.3 per cent

I don't understand the bad reviews as this stuff is the bomb!
It's light, a little goes a long way and it has no odour. The protection is outstanding. I sat in the sun yesterday (heat wave) for 5 hours after one application of this (30spf) and haven't burned at all.
I am fair and freckly so need a high SPF. This leaves your skin feeling moisturised.
I bought the 30spf one litre bottle - An absolute bargain.
Thank you Altruist!
Will be returning this item, very unhappy with product.
I will say after reading a few other reviewers here I have experienced a bit of clumping and balling up of the product. I am not sure why this happens, but I think for me it may be because the product had only partially set when I was touching my face/putting on a different product? This has happened less than 10 times for me over at last the eight-months so it's not really an issue for me or my skin type but is definitely something new buyers should be wary of.
But it seemed fantastic, easy to apply ,and you don't even know its on , no sticky residue.
A 1 product which I've already recommended to friends and family. Oh yer great value to for the cost if you compare it to shop bought over the counter sunscreens. I've been looking for years for something decent and now I've found it 👍
