My American friends have been able to buy this over the counter for years (in fact they can buy the stronger version which is 180mg).
sometimes my GP would only give me a months supply at a time... so given that you can buy these in packs of 30 for less than the cost of a prescription is fantastic.
If you've had the American stuff, I think they are known as Allegra over in the US... if you get these from the GP the normal brand is Telfast... I've had none generic ones from online pharmacists and usually they are about £10 for 30 -- so to have a name brand product that have been around for quite sometimes (granted over in the states) and for under £10...this is a real bargain.
These technically can be used for a variety of allergies - including dust, pets, etc - it's an antihistamine that is stronger, faster, and is less likely to cause drowsiness compared to others. It can even be used for insect bites, hives, eczema etc HOWEVER for it to be approved for over the counter use they only state it is for hay fever!!!
For best results - especially if you have moderate to severe hay fever - you should take this every day to help avoid or reduce symptoms... if you tend to have mild symptoms than using this for bad days will work fine.
be warned that you should not take this whilst taking other allergy meds!
Also if you drink alcohol it can make side effects worse (especially feeling sleepy)!
and for some reason certain fruit juices - apple juice, orange juice, grape juice - can also make certain side effects worse.
children shouldn't be on these - best going to your GP if you want these for kids because normally they take a smaller dose
All in all a very good medication for hay fever sufferers that's not available here rather than having to see a GP.
My worst symptoms would come at exam time and I’d sit there in school exams either sneezing or feeling really drowsy from the Piriton that I used to take.
As I got older, symptoms eased just a tad but things like cutting the grass was a nightmare and I used to wonder if I could afford one of those helmets , like a goldfish bowl that filter the air.
As a GP then, I’d be very keen to treat fellow sufferers enthusiastically and used what I call a ‘three-line whip’ of treatment: tablets, eye drops and nasal spray. I found this the most effective way and would encourage my patients to use treatments regularly and enthusiastically. It is also important to note that different people react in different ways to medication. Many would still suffer despite me trying everything I knew. Some would ask for treatments that others found to be ineffective. Thus, I never personally found loratadine effective and Cetirizine was also ineffective and used to make me very drowsy even though the drug reps who visited me assured me that this could not happen. Mizollen wasn’t bad but no better than Fexofenadine.
Triludan showed great promise and I guess this is still my favourite but this suffered (as some drugs do) from a rare but potentially fatal side effect – the prolonged QT interval which can cause the heart to beat erratically or even fail – sometimes this can also be a genetic propensity like with that footballer who collapsed mid-game some years ago.
Enter Fexofenadine or Allevia which is the next best thing to Triludan but is also safe as regards one’s heart. It’s a tad expensive but now it’s available OTC (over the counter) then it’s probably easier to buy than to get in to see my GP (!) I combine it with Opticrom and Pirinase.
My favourite eye drops were Optilast and the best nose spray to my mind was Avamys but these are not yet available OTC and from online Pharmacy services they work out very expensive.
For now then, and for me Allevia is probably the best one can purchase OTC and Amazon delivered my tablets in no time and I was able to start them straight away. The tablets definitely help with my sneezing and general itchiness though I still use regular eye drops. Each table lasts a good 24 hrs and there are no side effects. Please note also occasionally for really bad sufferers and those who had certain allergic skin conditions we’d go to a 180mg dose not a 120 but of course please discuss this with your GP before doing this.
Lastly, for some years I’d have the injection in my bottom (my wife used to love giving it!) This is a really long needle because the stuff is thick and gloopy which is why it can last for up to 60 days. This is Kenalog or Triamcinalone. I found this the best treatment for hayfever but some years ago it was panned by a report in the Drugs and Therapeutics Bulletin who reported that such old treatment should no longer be considered especially when better medication was now available. I and many of my male patients disagreed and some would come in at the start of the season and beg me for this type of treatment. It is still used in nasty flare ups of rheumatoid arthritis and I see a national cycle team was having it delivered by the box full for their ‘asthma’ though I’ve never ever seen it used for such. Good luck.
If you want to buy sleeping pills without prescription then this is your pill. Like many hayfever tablets - this probably being one of the worst (for me - might work for you) - this had me asleep shortly after taking. A deep deep sleep. And did it cure my hayfever? No.
The search continues for a good over the counter hayfever tablet. Maybe I just do need a prescription.
Negative: Unsuitable for taking alongside blood pressure meds Amlodopine and Ramapril. Gave heart palpatations (not Allevia's fault, didn't check with pharmacist before taking and mixing meds)
