"After the Wedding" appears to be marketed as a psychological thriller, but I would suggest that this is a misleading description. It certainly sits within the broader thriller genre, but attaching the additional "psychological" tag is tenuous, to say the least. The "thriller" element essentially relates to organised crime, which is at the heart of this story. There is a psychological aspect, but this relates to the way in which the human brain can sometimes suppress memories of harrowing experiences.
The early sections of this novel were quite encouraging. The writing was fluent, engaging and augured well for what was yet to come. Unfortunately, these early signs of promise did not develop as I would have hoped. Instead of being fluent and engaging, the narrative became increasingly clunky and disjointed and reading more than a chapter at a time became something of a chore.
The plot certainly had the potential to make for enthralling reading and the sub-plot regarding memory suppression offered the prospect of another intriguing thread that could be developed and provide food for thought. Unfortunately, I don't think the author made the most of the opportunities. The characterisation was too often clichéd and superficial and events were all too frequently described in a melodramatic fashion. In the end, this was not a book that is likely to live long in the memory.
This writer has a very assured hand. You think you know where something is going, then the twist comes and you get the heart race you came for.
It's told mainly from the perspective of Christine, the successful businesswoman at the heart of the story who buried childhood trauma in the wake of a near-drowning incident aged five, when she wandered off at a relative's wedding. As memories resurface under hypnosis, her world begins to unravel.
Her husband - whose head has been turned by a recent arrival in their shared office - seeks to dismiss her recollections, and a split comes into their marriage, marking the beginning of a process of isolation for Christine that will leave her dangerously exposed to dark forces - as she seeks to uncover the events witnessed that fateful day.
Without giving too much away, let's just say the story mixes the world of sleek corporatism with an altogether darker criminal underworld, defined by a particularly ruthless core, concerning a set of historic crimes that have remained unsolved.
The personal cost of what Christine must unearth is enormous, yet this is a heroine's journey that must be taken, and not just to survive psychologically, but to survive at all.

After the first few chapters I almost abandoned it. Unrealistic.
Don’t see it as psychological genre at all. Crime yes. By the end I was scanning. Just couldn’t get into it. Glad it’s over.
