This isn't the original The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark story. Try to buy the original Young Puffin version it's magical!

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark abridged picture-book version is only worth one star. I bought this version thinking the text would be as the original unabridged story. I read the original story to my daughters as children and decided to buy it to read to my granddaughter. Like another of your reviewers unfortunately I got the new version. The illustrations may be good but the original story was magical. No illustration can replace Jill Tomlinson's descriptive, funny text!! It was humorous and the development of Plop's character was a joy to read-Plop didn't want to be a night bird-he took a deep breath and fell off his branch-he didn't fly down! I had to resort to buying a second hand edition of the original book and then did the acid test: I read both versions to my granddaughter and yes she loved the unabridged text of the original story and it has become a favourite at bedtime whilst the new abridged illustrated book is being ignored! If I was reviewing the original unabridged book then it would definitely be 5 stars but this new picture book only earns a single star from both me and my granddaughter.

Got this book to try and help with my 3.5yr old, who's become very terrified of the dark!

We Was both disappointed at first because I didn't realise it was a "regular" black and white paper book with very little pictures...not what my daughter is use to but my daughter has loved it so far.
I Was planning to just going to read one chapter a night, however she's been asking for more, so night #2 we are already in chapter 4
She already said tonight "I like the dark"
So fingers crossed it's helping and working ;)

Great story, well written, easy and enjoyable to read..

It's great she's using her imagination well but she does keep turning the pages whilst I'm trying to read (tearing the pages) little annoying!!!

I am about to look for another version of the book with pictures

I read the original book when I was in primary school, and decided to buy it again now that I'm much older. This is not the same book - it is much shorter and it misses out large chunks of the story and lacks the charm of the original book. The title and book description should make it clear this is a completely different book and is considerably shorter seemingly designed for a much younger audience.

I brought this book because its my sons topic book for school. We were not disappointed, even though we are on two chapters in the giggles we're just brilliant. This story is so beautiful and witty. I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends with children. My children are 5 and 7 and it's perfect for them to enjoy.

Bought this for my little boy as I had it when I was little and loved it so I thought I'd enjoy reading it with him I thought they had just changed the cover sadly they have changed the story so was very disappointed. So ended up buying the original and reading that one with him.
